How to Remove Bing Search Suggestions

Settings & fixesUpdated 2 min read
Quick answer

Suggestions based on your searches come from your Bing history: clear it, or turn history off at bing.com/profile/history, and they stop. Suggestions based on what everyone searches can be switched off in Bing's settings (Search suggestions). Suggestions from your browser are removed by clearing browser history.

The drop-down under the search box mixes three different sources, and each one is removed in a different place.

1. Your past searches

When history is on, Bing uses it to suggest searches you've made before. To remove them:

Bing also suggests common searches as you type. They're not about you and can't be deleted, but you can turn them off:

  1. On bing.com, open the menu (☰) and go to Settings (More settings).
  2. Find Search suggestions.
  3. Turn off Show search suggestions as you type and save.

This setting is saved in a cookie, so set it again if you clear cookies or use another browser.

3. Your browser's address bar

In the address bar, Edge, Chrome and Safari suggest pages you've visited and searches from their own history.

  • Remove one: highlight the suggestion with the arrow keys and press Shift+Delete (Windows) or Shift+Fn+Delete (Mac). In Chrome you can also click the X next to it.
  • Remove all: clear your browsing history in the browser's settings.
  • Turn off in Edge: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Address bar and search, then switch off search and site suggestions.

Recent searches in the Windows taskbar box are stored by Windows, not Bing. See how to clear Windows search history.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Bing suggest searches I never made?

Those are popular searches from other people, or searches from another device using your account. Turn off search suggestions to hide popular ones.

Will clearing cookies remove Bing suggestions?

It removes signed-out history on that browser and resets Bing settings. It doesn't remove history saved to your Microsoft account.
